Chronic Dev Team member Joshua Hill, aka p0sixninja, recently tweeted reminding jailbreakers that they should update to iOS 5.0.1 before Apple releases another update and stops signing 5.0.1.

Now that we have an untethered jailbreak for all A4-powered devices and its counterpart for A5-powered devices is on the cards, it has become imperative that users update to iOS 5.0.1 and preserve SHSH blobs (Signature HaSH blobs) for all devices, including the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. It will help users downgrade to iOS 5.0.1 in the future and have access to an untethered jailbreak.

What is SHSH Blobs?

SHSH blobs is a signature file, used against the Apple server to downgrade a device to an earlier version of iOS. Apple will be releasing an update for iOS 5 shortly, and if any user upgrades his or device to the latest built (iOS 5.1), these SHSH blobs will help to downgrade the device to iOS 5.0.1.

iDownloadBlog has provided a detailed guide to help the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak by using TinyUmbrella and RedSn0w. Check out the video below:

Step 1: Download latest versions of TinyUmbrella and RedSn0w.

Step 2: Connect the device to the computer.

Step 3: Open TinyUmbrella and Save your 5.0.1 SHSH blobs, using the settings as demonstrated in the video. However, this has to be done before Apple stop signing iOS 5.0.1. Users can also recover their blobs from Cydia if they have already them saved on Cydia's servers.

Step 4: Now open RedSn0w, go to Extras and then SHSH blobs.

Step 5: Click Stitchand then click IPSW to locate the iOS 5.0.1 firmware for your device.

Step 6: After selecting the firmware, click Local and select the 5.0.1 SHSH blob. The RedSn0w will stitch the firmware and the SHSH blob together.

Step 7: Save the new self-contained IPSW file to a safe spot.

Users should note that as of now stitching only applies to A4 devices, not for A5 devices like the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Users of A5 devices can save both the firmware for iOS 5.0.1 and the SHSH blob in a safe place. They can stitch them together whenever a bootrom level exploit is found for A5 devices.

After that, they can restore using the stitched IPSW file by utilizing PwnedDFU mode and the Custom IPSW option in RedSn0w.
