Girl Scout Cookies season has arrived and hundreds of girls are eager to begin selling their treats this week. Despite the popularity of classic Thin Mints and Samoas, a new cookie, Savannah Smiles, has joined the ranks in 2012 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Scouts.
Savannah Smiles are described as "bite-size, lemon-wedged cookies dusted with powdered sugar and bursting with zesty lemon flavor." The organization hopes this newest addition to the classic Girls Scouts' tradition will be a big hit this winter. The new cookies are named for the town of Savannah, Ga., where founder Juliette Gordon Low started the Girl Scouts back in 1912.
As hungry fans wait for their doorbells to ring, many have sought other means to find where they can buy Savannah Smiles and their other favorite winter treats.
The much-loved Girl Scout Cookies are not sold online as sales of the cookies continue to be a competition between the girls as part of the leadership experience program. The cookies can only be purchased from a Scout or from a Girl Scouts booth. The organization urges that any cookies found for sale online should not be purchased under any circumstances as they do not support the girls in the program.

Customers who want to support the Girl Scouts, but are not interested in purchasing cookies, can also buy boxes of cookies as a donation. The boxes are then used in community projects, known as "gifts of caring," and may be given in food collections.
Approximately 70% of the proceeds of Girl Scout Cookies are given to the local Girl Scouts council, including the group directly selling the cookies. The remaining balance pays the two commercial bakers, ABC Bakers and Littler Brownie Bakers, for the cookies.
By participating in the Girl Scout Cookies sales, girls can earn awards, such as the cookie and financial literary badges or the annual Cookie Activity Pin. Girls can also win awards based on their sales activity, such as program credits or recognition items.
Cookie sales have started this week and will continue until March 18. Give a call to your local Girl Scouts council and buy some of your favorite cookies soon.

Thin Mint -- The most popular flavor over time, the Thin Mint is "the most enduring and universally familiar Girl Scout cookie," according to the organization. The cookies are round and mint-flavored with a distinctive crunch and a dark chocolate coating.
Samoas or Caramel deLites -- Doughnut-shaped cookies with a hole in the center, they are "covered in caramel and toasted coconut, and striped with chocolate." Samoas are made by Little Brownie Bakers. The ABC bakery version is called Caramel deLites and they come in a purple box.
Do-si-dos or Peanut Butter Sandwich -- "This sandwich cookie has a crisp and crunchy oatmeal outside with creamy peanut butter filling." Do-si-dos are made by Little Brownie Bakers. The ABC version is called Peanut Butter Sandwiches.
