According to the latest reports, an iOS 5.0.1 firmware has been launched that will allow users to unlock an iPhone 4 running on iOS 5.0.1. The new firmware has been launched to deliver better performances and fix reported bugs for all iOS devices.

Gevey SIM can unlock an iPhone 4 running a baseband (modem firmware) up to 4.10.01. Therefore, this tutorial is meant to show users how to update the iPhone 4 to iOS 5.0.1 while preserving the unlockable baseband at the same time. This can be done via Redsn0w 0.9.10 b3, as it will deal with custom firmware that will be used with iTunes to restore the iPhone 4.

However, it is to be noted that if the device has been updated to stock iOS 5.0.1 firmware, it will update the phone baseband to 4.11.08 which hasn’t been unlocked thus far. Here are the steps that are to be followed...

Step 1: First, connect the iDevice to the PC with a USB cable and open Redsn0w (Links provided below).

Step 2: Start Redsn0w and press “Extras” – “Custom IPSW” and point Redsn0w to iOS 5.0.1 ipsw firmware (Link provided below). Redsn0w will now deal with the custom iOS 5 ipsw firmware.

Step 3: Now click on “Pwned DFU”

Step 4: Here, make sure the device is both turned off and plugged into the PC, before clicking “Next”.

When completed, a screen will appear that will guide the user on entering the DFU mode. Here, quickly hold the “Power” button and while holding it, also hold the “Home” button. Remember to release the “Power” button after a few seconds but keep holding the “Home” button until installation begins.

Step 5: Now, open iTunes and restore the iPhone to the Custom iOS ipsw (the file name starts with NO_BB).

If the above mentioned steps are performed successfully, the device will be unlocked on iOS 5.0.1.

(Remember to download the required setups and softwares before you go forward with the steps)
