An Amtrak passenger train derailed Wednesday in the state of Michigan injuring at least 10 people as it hit a truck carrying oil equipment at a crossing.
The locomotive fell onto its side and the first two cars of the train derailed, Amtrak stated. The train, on its way to Chicago, was carrying 71 passengers and five crew members when the incident occured.
None of the injuries sustained by the 10 people appeared life threatening. With the railroad track seriously damaged, Amtrak has temporarily suspended service between the cities of Detroit and Chicago and repairs are ongoing. The train had two locomotives and six railcars.
Services have been suspended across central Michigan and alternate transportation is being arranged by Wolverine Service trains. The Federal Railroad Administration has annouced that it will conduct an investigation into the accident.
