A jury of seven men and women was selected today for the murder trial of former University of Virginiastudent and accused lacrosse killer George Huguely. The trial is expected to last two weeks. Opening arguments will begin today as well.

George Huguely plead not guilty to six charges on Feb. 6, including first-degree murder for the 2010 slaying of fellow UVA student Yeardley Love.

At that time Huguely was a senior lacrosse star at the UVA , just weeks away from graduation. Twenty-two-year-old Huguely had been dating Yeardley Love, a classmate at the University, as well as a lacrosse player. After previous altercations in the months earlier, Huguely violently shook his ex-girlfriend's head and repeatedly slammed it into the wall. He left her face down on a pillow, which the Washington Post described as soaked with her blood.

Who is George Huquely, and what lead him to the murder for which he is on trial today?

A Bright Upbringing

Huguely attended school at the exclusive, all-boys Landon School in Bethesda, Md. While there he was starting quarterback and lacrosse all-American, reports the Washington Post.

Violent History

Huguely's violent rage that killed Love wasn't an unfamiliar territory for him. The former UVA student received a suspended sentence after a drunken encounter with a female police officer in November 2008, said the Washington Post. A Taser was used to attempt to subdue the drunken athlete. On Feb. 27, 2010, just months before Love's death, Huguely took his violence out on his then girlfriend. It was reported that University of North Carolina lacrosse players had to pull Huguely off of Love. The encounter in February was followed by a conversation in March that Love had with her family. She described Huguely as aggressive.

Emails

Love broke things off with Huguely within the months leading to her death. It was during that time that she received threatening emails from her hot-tempered ex-boyfriend. Just days before Love died of blows to the head, Huguely sent her an email saying, I should have killed you. Prosecutors presented this statement in the opening of the murder trial today. He explained that the email was in response to hearing that Love had slept with someone else. Love responded in an email back saying, You should've killed me? and Huguely wrote back, We should talk tonight. The emails are expected to be a key piece of evidence in the trial. Huguely's attorney is attempting to fight the image that the emails make Love's murder pre-meditated. He's not complicated. He's not complex, said his attorney, He's a lacrosse player.
