The Heart Truth is a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

The campaign created and introduced the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2002 to deliver an urgent wake-up call to American women.

Following its launch, the Red Dress symbol attracted the attention of the fashion industry with celebrities and models promoting it through a Red Dress Collection Fashion Show.

The fashion show, an annual New York Fashion Week kickoff event, puts celebrity models in a parade of gowns by some of the country's most famous designers.

For the current year, supermodel Christie Brinkley, singer Gloria Estefan and other stars paraded the ramp in designer red dresses. From Oscar de la Renta to Marchesa, Jason Wu and Donna Karan, the celebrities wore elaborate creations to create awareness for the campaign.

"My grandfather died in front of me of a massive heart attack when I was 12, and he had five before that so I know what that's like," Reuters quoted Estefan speaking about the pain that heart disease can bring.
