Manchester United vs. Liverpool or Patrice Evra vs. Luis Suarez: Other Cases of Racism in Football [SLIDESHOW]
This is D-Day.
This is all set to be one of the most hotly debated and eagerly anticipated Premier League games in recent history.
This is all set to rank right up there with the game between Chelsea and Manchester City... after John Terry got into a bit of trouble over an affair with fellow international Wayne Bridge's girlfriend and two farcically refused to shake hands when their clubs met in the Premier League.
This is no longer a game between Manchester United and Liverpool. Instead, it is the return of the latter's Uruguayan striker - Luis Suarez... and the former's French full back - Patrice Evra.
Why is that special ? well... the last time these two faced off, it resulted in Evra accusing Suarez of racism and was the spark for what became one of the biggest and most controversial racism cases in recent time!
And it could happen all over again!
Meanwhile, check out a few other instances of racism in club football...
Samuel Eto'o
Talismanic and mercurial Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o is only one of a string of players to have faced racial abuse while playing in Spain. The former Barcelona man, most notably, was hit by abuse when playing a league game against Real Zaragoza. Opposition fans reportedly began making monkey-like chants whenever Eto'o had possession of the ball and even threw peanuts at him. Eto'o, visibly upset, threatened to leave the pitch and was only prevented from doing so by his team mates and the referee. In a fitting reply, after winning the game 4-1, Eto'o danced like a monkey in front of the Zaragoza fans. Other Spanish league players to complain of racisim include Espanyol's goalkeeper Carlos Kameni and Real Madrid's left back Marcelo.
John Terry
John Terry has an increasingly less than savory reputation at the upper echelons of the domestic and international game. Once regarded as a demi-god by the Chelsea and English faithful and as one of the best central defenders in the world, the Chelsea captain has gone downhill from there. Allegations of an affair with former team mate Wayne Bridge's girlfriend and accusations of having racially abused his international team mate Rio Ferdinand's younger brother - Anton Ferdinand - have severely dented his image.
Luis Suarez
In October, 2011, Liverpool FC hosted traditional arch-rivals Manchester United at Anfield, for a Premier League game. The game, exciting though it was, was scoreless until the 58th minute… when an already tense match absolutely erupted. Suárez fouled United’s French left back Evra… more correctly the striker landed a well-aimed kick at Evra’s knee. The next few minutes saw a gigantic flare-up between Suárez and Evra, with the former repeatedly racially taunting Evra; he later admitted to having used the word “negro”.
Mario Balotelli
Italian Serie A club Juventus were, collectively, at the receiving end of a punishment after their fans were found guilty of racially abusing Mario Balotelli, who was then playing for Inter Milan. The prodigiously talented forward, then only 18, has something of a fiery reputation and has been the subject of racist comments and remarks for quite some time. Juventus' club President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli later apologised to Balotelli and said Serie A had to end the culture of racism among fans.
Roberto Carlos
In March, retired Brazilian international Roberto Carlos, playing for Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala against Zenit St. Petersburg, had a banana held near him by one of the opposition's fans; the racial taunt being to suggest the former Real Madrid star was a monkey. A similar incident also occured in June, when in a game against Krylia Sovetov Samara, someone in the crowd threw a banana at him.
