It's sad when anybody dies, especially when a beautiful and talented singer dies so young. Whitney Houston was my age and that's what makes this so hard to believe.

In the 1980s, when Whitney and I were both young, she was the biggest pop star in the world.

How could someone like that die before her time?

She was ruined by her marriage to the horrid, violent, abusive Bobby Brown and by crack addiction. She has been a sad, tragic train-wreck for the past two decades.

I prefer to remember her as the young and lovely singer who captured our hearts.

I absolutely loved her rendition of “The greatest love of all.”

But she was destroyed by her fame and wealth, which led to drug addiction and early passing.

I feel so bad now that I used to criticize and make fun of her for how her life went down the toilet.

I remember an old girlfriend of mine loved Whitney – she said “Whitney can do no wrong.” I ridiculed her for saying that because by that time, Houston had already succumbed to her addiction and was becoming something of a tragic, pathetic joke. Then I apologized because I realized that I, too, had been seduced by Whitney's magical voice and ethereal beauty.

Whitney had a gift from God, but it ruined her.

Here are the lyrics to her finest performance:

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me

I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

And if by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love
