Earthquake California: Valentine's Day 2012 Tremor

Just one day after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit northern California, two other earthquakes hit nearby early Valentine's Day: a 5.1-magnitude quake in northwest Mexico and a 3-magnitude earthquake in southern California.

The epicenters of Tuesday's quake were Baja California, Mexico, within 35 miles of Arizona, for the 5.6-magnitude earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Service, and Borrego Springs, Calif. for the 3.0-magnitude earthquake.

In the last 10 days, four earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater have hit California, according to L.A. Now, the blog of the L.A. Times.

No damage was reported in any of the earthquakes as of Tuesday.

Accuweather noted that in Tuesday's 5.1 tremor: "The estimated "perceived shaking" near the quake epicenter was magnitude VI, or "strong," on the Mercali scale. Such shaking would have light to moderate damage potential, depending upon the vulnerability of affected buildings."

Residents of La Quinta and Twentynine Palms reported minor shaking, according to news reports.
