Gerard Butler has joined one of Hollywood's most famous clubs: rehab.

According to TMZ, the 42-year-old Scottish actor checked himself into the Betty Ford Center three weeks ago, after being addicted to prescription drugs.

The rehab visit comes some two months after Butler injured himself on the set of Of Men and Mavericks, a film based on the real life story of the late surfer Jay Moriarity.

At the time, Butler was pulled underwater off the north coast of California after being hit by giant waves.

TMZ reports that Butler's addiction to prescription drugs was retriggered following the Mavericks injury; his addiction actually stems back to 2006, when he was shooting the physically demanding 300.

In a 2007 interview with Men's Health, Butler revealed that he spent four months training for the role of King Leonidas.

I wanted to look really strong . . . I've seen so many actors play these kinds of roles, and you see all this equipment on either a big belly or skinny little arms, he told Men's Health.

You know that every bead of sweat falling off your head, every weight you've pumped -- the history of that is all in your eyes . . . I was standing there feeling like a lion, Butler added.

Butler is expected to check out of Betty Ford on Friday, TMZ reports.
