Vermont is one of 10 states that will be holding its Republican presidential contest Tuesday night on one of the most important and revealing evenings of the 2012 GOP nomination process.

Mitt Romney is widely expected to win the state by five to 10 points. According to a Castleton State College poll, Romney had the support of 34 percent of voters. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum garnered 27 percent, Texas Congressman Ron Paul came in third with 14 percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich came in last with 10 percent.

Seventeen delegates are up for grabs. If a candidate wins at least 50 percent of the vote, he'll earn all of the delegates. Otherwise, they'll be awarded proportionately. Vermont could be a huge advantage for Romney over Santorum if he manages to win over half of the votes because it would put him a total of 17 delegates over the Pennsylvania Republican, his biggest challenge to the nomination. Unfortunately for Romney, the polls show a gap too small.

Vermont is an open state, meaning that any state resident can vote in the primary, regardless of their party affiliation.
