While many Android tablet rivals have come out to stand in the way of the iPad's success, none of them have come close. Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet has sold better than any of the other, larger tablets, and it's done so because of its $200 price tag. However, because tablet computers have only become popular since the 2010 introduction of the iPad, its Android counterparts are only now beginning to catch up.

Asus, a Taiwanese manufacturer, has perhaps come the closest as its Transformer series garnered the kind of online buzz a worthy iPad competitor should be able to generate. It was the first tablet to run the Android 4.0 system, but when it launched at the end of 2011, it had some problems with Wi-Fi, bluetooth and GPS connections.

In 2012, several new devices were announced at CES and MWC that could capture consumers' imaginations. They don't make the list of top five competitors, but some of the interesting devices previewed were the Huawei Mediapad 10 FHD, the Acer Iconia Tab A700 and the Asus Transformer Pad 700 HD. All three have HD displays, though none with the super-high pixelation as the new iPad. Start the slideshow to see the top five Android rivals to the new iPad. Tell us in the comments if you think the iPad will be a runaway success no matter what.
