The trailer for the 2012 movie remake Sparkle debuted on The Today Show on Monday, featuring the late Whitney Houston in her last role in the two-minute teaser video.

Sparkle is a remake of the 1976 eponymous film starring Irene Cara, Lonette McKee and Philip Michael Thomas.

Jordin Sparks plays Sparkle Williams as she and her two sisters played by Carmen Ejojo and Tika Sumpter become famous as a girl group in 1960's Harlem, battling through drug addiction. The film also stars Mike Epps and Cee-Lo Green.

The late Whitney Houston plays the mother, Emma, of the three women and a failed singer. Houston finished filming the movie just three months before she died on Feb. 11 from an accidental drowning stemming from heart disease and cocaine use.

I have an 18-year-old daughter, she told Access Hollywood before her death. I felt love that a woman has for her children in the late 60s, trying to keep a father together. Single mother. Hi. I just felt that passion for it. When it was suggested that I play the mother I said OK, 'I think I can do this. I've had a lot of practice.'

According to Movie Talk on Yahoo News, Houston wanted to make the film over a decade ago. But the project didn't get off the ground after the late R&B singer Aaliyah, cast as the lead role, died in a plane crash.

Sparkle his theaters August 17. Until then, watch the video of the trailer below.
