As previously mentioned, the Vampire Diaries was working on casting Elena Gilbert's (Nina Dobrev) deceased parents, Miranda and Grayson. While fans have caught a glimpse Elena's parents in photographs, they will finally be making an appearance on the show.

Miranda and Grayson Gilbert died in a car accident before season one of the series. After picking Elena up from a late night party they accidentally drove off Mystic Fall's Wickery Bridge. It was there that Elena had her first encounter with Stefan (Paul Wesley), who dove into the water to rescue her from the car. It wasn't until after her parent's died that Elena discovered that they were not her biological parents.

Dread Central reports that fans of the show will finally meet the Gilbert's in the season three finale of the Vampire Diaries, which is set to air May 10. One of the things we want to do in the finale is explore a time for Elena when life was simpler, executive producer Julie Plec told TV Guide. She had parents and no vampires in her life.

Elena's father, Grayson, will be played by James MacDonald, who will also be in the 2013 release of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D. Miranda, Elena's mother, will be played by Erin Beute, of the 2012 film Tooth Fairy 2.

Besides the addition of Elena's parents, the season finale will find Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning), who died at the hands of Klaus, returning.

It doesn't look like Grayson, Miranda and Aunt Jenna will be returning as ghosts. Elena's parents will appear in a flashback to the night of the accident on Wickery Bridge. In order to prepare for the scene, the cast has been working on SCUBA training. While Paul Wesley told reporters at the PaleyFest in March that he was taking lessons, his co-star, Dobrev is already a pro. The actress has her SCUBA certification card from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.

According to Dobrev, they were in the water for two days, filming for eight hours each day. By the end, I was exhausted and slept like a baby, said Dobrev. That's something I hopefully will never have to experience in real life...trying to survive underwater while trying to save other people.
