Sony has finally revealed the release date for its PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, which is expected to be the Sony equivalent to Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. franchise. The fighting-game mashup will be available on Oct. 23 in the U.S., Oct. 24 in most of Europe, and Oct. 26 in the U.K.

The game will also be hitting shelves for PlayStation Vita owners as well, and gamers can play via the web and from the handheld device as a controller for PlayStation 3 consoles.

We've been thrilled to hear all of the great responses to the news about the game so far, and have been reading all of your questions and comments on the blogs and forums, Cristian Cardona, associate product marketing manager for PlayStation's Software Marketing, wrote on the official blog.

The PlayStation team certainly answered some questions that fans have been pondering, such as when the game will be released and why fans should preorder. Gamers who preorder will gain access to an exclusive set of costumes for each character in the game.

The blog post also revealed that two more characters will be announced Friday, and an additional two will be unveiled during Comic-Con 2012. Cardona also ensured that gamers will have plenty of opportunities to unlock multiple costumes for each character after purchasing the game. However, there are certain outfits that will only be available for customers who preorder PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

We'll have plenty more details on the game-including pricing for both the PS3 and Vita versions-soon enough, but we wanted to give you a date to mark on your calendars, Cardona wrote.

So far, eight characters from the game have already been revealed, taking some of the most iconic characters from PlayStation's gaming history. This includes Sly Cooper, Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal, Fat Princess, Big Daddy from BioShock, Nathan Drake from Uncharted, Parappa the Rapper, and others.

There are still some landmark PlayStation characters that have not been announced, but perhaps Sony is holding out to unveil some of the most anticipated characters at the last minute. There has been no word of Crash Bandicoot or Sypro the Dragon, but gamers will have to wait until further notice to see if they make the cut.

Some leaks have indicated that Jak from Jak and Daxter will be a playable character, and Toro, known as the Sony Cat, who has appeared in various PlayStation games such as Ape Escape, Tales of Grace and others.
