The suspect in a Colorado shooting during a late-night screening of The Dark Knight Rises that has left 12 dead admitted to having explosives in his home. The Daily Mail reported that residents heard a small explosion as a police robot entered the booby-trapped apartment.

Police Chief Dan Oates said that an apartment block in the north of Aurora had been evacuated after claims were made that suspect James Holmes possessed explosives.

Footage from the scene has revealed that FBI agents and police officers used a hook and ladder fire truck to reach the inside of the building. Authorities put a camera at the end of a 12-foot pole inside the apartment and were watching footage of what the camera saw on a small television screen. Television video showed an officer wearing a helmet smashing the windows of Holmes' third-floor apartment.

According to CBS News, the shooter's home and belongings will be key to the investigation, and authorities are taking precautionary measure when searching Holmes' apartment.

The normal way to do that is, you either take the keys off the suspect and you go in, or you boom the door, Miller said according to CBS. They've got the back covered, and they're using a pole camera with fiber-optics to look through the windows. Because they are very concerned if you have explosives there and you have a suspect who said 'here's my address, go to my house.' Search my place.' There well could be booby traps that could be set up for the entry team.

The 24-year-old Holmes was arrested after opening fire on Friday, and police do not believe others were involved in the shooting. The shooter was wearing a gas mask, and offered no resistance when being arrested.
