Jordyn Wieber, the defending world champion, was knocked out of the competition to win the all-around final in the women's gymnastics event at the London 2012 Olympics.

The 17-year-old gymnast competing for team USA placed behind teammates Gabrielle Douglas and Aly Raisman as the American team completed the qualifying round. Raisman came in first with a score of 60.391, Douglas placed second with a 60.265 score, and Wieber placed third with a score of 60.032. The official USA Gymnastics Twitter account posted the results online.

Wieber scored with 14.666 on her floor program, according to the Associated Press, and was slightly ahead of Raisman.

"You try to find words because it's almost like someone passes away, and what do you say?" team coordinator Martha Karolyi said to NBCOlympics.com. "But the fact is the fact. She did her best and she was edged by her teammates."

The American gymnast didn't say much, but she seemed to indicate that she will pull through.

"I'll be alright," she said as she was led away by a women's coach, according to NBCOlympics.com.

In this year's Olympics, the American gymnastics team will compete for its first gold victory since 1996, when it placed in first in the Atlanta games. Teams from Russia, China and Romania are expected to be the American's top competitors, according to the Chicago Tribune, with top gymnasts such as Aliya Mustafina and Viktoria Komova predicted to shine.

Mustafina, competing for Russia, was hindered by an ACL surgery during most of her 2011 season. The 17-year-old gymnast injured her knee as she landed while competeing in the vault competition. However, the 2010 world champion is expected to come back with a vengeance for the 2012 Olympic games. Another Russian favorite, Viktoria Komova, was the all-around runner-up in 2011.

China has currently taken the lead in the Olympic games, racking up gold medals on Saturday. Yi Siling took the gold for the women's 10-meter air rifle shooting competition, Ye Shiwen placed on top for the women's 400 individual medley swimming competition, and Sun Yang won the men's 400 freestyle swimming event.

As for the women's gymnastics division, the 20-year-old Kexin He is on top for the all-around team overview statistics for China. Her overall cumulative score for the all-around is 29.699, and the Chinese women's gymnastics team has placed just under Russia's and the USA's teams.
