Barney in his future wedding

"We're in early conversations and we're pretty optimistic," CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler told reporters about a possible ninth season for the comedy "How I Met Your Mother." Don't go running down to MacLaren's Pub for a celebratory drink, Tassler continued that "we're not there yet."

CBS is currently in negotiations to bring back "How I Met your Mother" for one last hurrah after the series had their highest-rated season in season seven.

"We're all on the edge of our seats waiting to see what will happen with these negotiations," co-creator and co-executive producer Craig Thomas told TVGuide.com. "We're hopeful we'll get an answer because obviously that will affect the story one way or the other quite a bit."

The extra season will affect the series because Ted Mosby has yet to tell his kids the story of how he met their mother. "They've stuck with us," Thomas said of fans. "We want to make sure we know in time that it's the end so we can give them the proper wrap-up that they deserve."

While the ninth season is still up in the air, some eighth season spoilers have leaked out of Barney's playbook.

"We're picking up where we left off in May," said Thomas. "One through six [episodes] we know. Seven through 12, we're good for some of that. Somewhere along there, there are really two roads diverging into the woods."

Doomed Relationships

Thomas revealed that when season eight premieres we will see three doomed relationships: Barney and Quinn, Victoria and Ted, and Robin and her new love interest played by Michael Trucco.

Last season we discovered that Barney ends up marrying Robin, which means that Barney's relationship with Quinn and Robin's relationship with her new beau are bound for failure. Fans of the series already know that Victoria does not end up being the mother of Ted's kids.

"We're calling October, 'Breakup Month,'" Thomas revealed to TVLine. "This is the month where some stuff went crazy in these relationships...But Victoria is around for a while." Ashley Williams has been confirmed to return as Victoria for a multi-episode arc.

Future Glimpses

"How I Met Your Mother" is going to be doing a lot of backtracking, but executive producer/director Pamela Fryman did tease to TVLine that fans will get a glimpse of the future again.

"We jump further forward in that future wedding day," Thomas explained. "The glimpses of that future Barney/Robin wedding day have been really important to the story." Thomas went as far as to say that the new information from the Barney/Robin wedding day will "blow some people's minds."

"It's the day Ted meets the mother," Thomas continued about "huge" stuff happening. "We jump to the end of that wedding day and show you something crazy."

Marshall And Lily's Parenting Challenges

"Who's our babysitter? Who's our nanny? Who's going to help us with this?" Thomas throws out to TVLine about Marshall and Lily's new challenges with the baby. Thomas promises that fans will still see them in MacLarens for the occasional beer, and that the baby isn't a real downer for the group, but actually their sixth member. "It's going to be very sweet."

Season eight of "How I Met Your Mother" premieres on CBS on Sept. 24. A "How I Met Your Mother" soundtrack will be released the same day on iTunes. The album will feature 20 tracks of original music from the show. Don't miss out on getting your hands on some Robin Sparkles tunes.
