Despite problems that plagued its launch of Droid X, it did turn out to be a major hit from Motorola. Now the mobile company plans to unveil its next smartphone Droid 2 which will be the first Motorola smartphone to feature Google’s Android 2.2 OS known as Froyo.

The new smartphone Droid 2 will not be the successor of Droid X, but rather the successor for the original Droid in terms of having virtual keyboard.

To be launched in August, Droid 2 is expected to feature 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB-memory card, 5-megapixel camera and QWERTY keyboard. Droid 2 will also have Motorola’s MotoBlur skin for Android.

Apart from these features, the new smartphone from Motorola may have same weight of 5.96 oz and a 3.7-inch (480 x 854 pixel) screen similar to the original Droid. Droid X has 4.3-inch display and an 8-megapixel camera to its credit.

And Droid 2 may not contain a HDMI port as Droid X has. The leaked pictures and specifications on several websites confirm that the Droid 2 looks similar to the original Droid.

Currently, Android 2.2 that is running on some Nexus One smartphones has a faster browser and a cloud messaging API, which often make Google quite optimistic about.

With the release of Droid 2, Droid X also may be upgraded to 2.2 version of Android platform. And the new smartphone from Motorola is expected to be priced around $200 with a two year Verizon contract, say media reports.

As Droid X has caught the market with surprise sales on day one, Droid 2 may be the next to give competition to Apple's iPhone.

Verizon will be the service provider for Droid 2. As of now, with good sales of Android-based smartphones, Verizon is giving tough competition to AT&T’s iPhone.

Christopher King, an analyst at Stifel Nicolaus & Co, is confident of Verizon's success. “They’re (Verizon) doing far better than AT&T both from a margin standpoint and a net-add standpoint.”
