Afghan and coalition forces in Afghanistan recovered the remains of one of the two missing U.S. Navy service members on Sunday while the other has been captured, officials said early Tuesday.
A large-scale search began after the pair went missing on Friday afternoon, but officials had been tight-lipped on details amid media reports that the Taliban had killed one and captured the other. Officials have not identified either sailor.
"We will continue this effort until our servicemember is recovered," NATO's International Security Assistance Force said in a statement. "ISAF holds the captors accountable for the safety and proper treatment of our missing servicemember."
On Sunday, Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in Kabul that forces were doing "everything we can" to search for the missing service members.
"We've got a large number of forces focused on the return of these two individuals," he said.

On Saturday, ISAF said the pair had departed from their compound in Kabul City in a vehicle and did not return. No reason was given for their departure.
The search includes forces on the ground and in helicopters as they search for the remaining individual and the vehicle.
