Apple releases Safari 5.0.1 version; fixes flaws in Mac OS X version

Apple updated its Safari browser to version 5.0.1 on Wednesday. The newly released version enables third-party extension support in the web browser application.

Installing update shows Safari’s new extension platform, which has more than 90 extensions and can be accessed through the Safari Extensions Gallery. HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3 were used to create the extensions. Few of the extensions in Safari are from Amazon, Bing, MLB.com, The New York Times and Twitter.

The update has improved Safari Reader stability, improved scrolling in MobileMe Mail, improved compatibility with specific Web sites, improved JavaScript encryption in 32-bit mode and improved Flash 10.1 compatibility. The Safari update is free.

Also on Tuesday, Apple released updates for Mac OS X version 10.6.4 and addressed issues relating to latest iMacs. And along with general fixes and improvements for iMacs, Aperture 3 and improvements for external devices were also mentioned. Also updates included improvements found in the Mac OS X v10.6.1, 10.6.2, and 10.6.3.

The updates in the website showed improvement in the fixes showing corrections in the compatibility and performance of graphics, SDXC memory cards and added support for recently released Magic Trackpad, a new multi-touch device intended for desktops which enables the finger swiping on the screen (swiping, pinching to zoom a photo, scrolling etc.) similar to the features available in iPhone and iPad.

Other general fixes and improvements are for Braille display compatibility, keyboard or trackpad which was earlier unresponsive is resolved now, prevention of Adobe Creative Suite 3 applications not opening earlier are resolved, VPN connections are improved, DVD player's playback issue when using Good Quality Deinterlacing is resolved, editing photos with iPhoto or Aperture in full screen view issue is addressed and resolved, display sleep issue and right speaker sound that was louder earlier is corrected in MacBook Pro early generation computers.

New features for Safari 5.0 include click on the new Reader icon to view articles on the web in a single clutter-free page. The browser executes JavaScript up to 25 percent faster than Safari 4. Bing search option was added to already existing Google and Yahoo search engines. There is improved support for HTML5 and the new keyboard shortcuts make the browser switch between panels easy.

Security updates were also included in the website for iTunes 9.2.1, iOS 4, iTunes 9.2, Mac OS X v10.6.4 / Security Update 2010-004, Safari 5.0, Safari 4.1, Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 7, Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2, Security Update 2010-003, AirPort Base Station Update 2010-001, iTunes 9.1, QuickTime 7.6.6, Mac OS X v10.6.3 / Security Update 2010-002, Safari 4.0.5, OS 3.1.3 and iOS 3.1.3 for iPod touch and Security Update 2010-001.

Aperture 3 improvements showed adding tethered shooting support for additional digital camera models and IPTC metadata compatibility issue was also resolved.

External device fixes showed RAW image compatibility for additional digital cameras and compatibility issue with third-party USB web cameras were resolved. Also the issue related to third-party FireWire audio devices along with pairing issue with Apple remote were addressed.

The recently released iMacs two models were upgraded to the chipmaker’s more advanced Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. Also, the 21.5-inch iMac begins with a 3.06GHz i3 processor and the ATI Radeon HD 4670 discrete graphics with 256MB GDDR3. The intel Core i5 processor model is the fastest with 3.6GHz speed.

And the 27-inch iMac has a 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor and ATI Radeon HD 5750 discrete graphics with 1GB GDDR5 -- can be upgraded to the fastest processor Intel Core i5. Essentially, the new processors give a greater chance of 50 percent increase in performance compared to the product's previous generations.

And the iMac models are priced at $1,199 for 3.06GHz 21.5-inch model, $1,499 for 3.2GHz 21.5-inch model, $1,699 for 3.2GHz 27-inch model and $1,999 for 2.8GHz 27-inch model.
