At least 1,000 South African public sector workers marched through the streets of the Johannesburg CBD to Premier Nomvula Mokonyane’s office where they handed over a memorandum containing a list of their demands.

Employees are demanding an 8.6 percent salary increase, as well as a housing subsidy of R1 000. The unions turned down an above-inflation offer last week.

The state is offering employees a 6.5 percent wage hike and a R630 housing allowance, R10 more than the previous offer.

"We have now come to a firm conclusion that we go on strike," said Slovo Majola, a member of the negotiating team of the coalition of unions.

Their demands are almost twice the annual rate of inflation, which slowed to 4.2% in June it was reported.

Workers at state power utility Eskom won a 9% pay rise during the World Cup.
