Samsung after much success in sales of their Galaxy S smartphone which sold more than one million units in less than a week is planning to launch a tablet similar to the smartphone named Galaxy Tab on August 11. It was earlier christened S-Pad.

Rumours are abound over the specifications of the new tablet with many tech Web sites posting news confirming some of them.

The new Samsung Galaxy tablet may feature Google’s latest operating system Froyo (Android OS 2.2) with Samsung’s Touch Wiz UI, sporting a 7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display, running at 1.2GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, 16GB internal storage which is expandable using microSD and a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash and a front VGA camera. And the tablet may have Wi-Fi option.

There is no other tablet PC in the market launched to match Apple’s iPad features until now. If these rumored specifications are true, then Apple may have a stiff competitor very soon. Although Dell has launched the Dell Streak tablet in UK and yet to foray into the US market, the Dell tablet is less than 2-inch compared to Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Moreover, with Galaxy Tab 7-inch display, Dell Streak 5-inch display and Apple iPad’s 9.7-inch display, customers will have varied choice to choose from. In addition, Google will have great advantage since Samsung is opting for Android-based OS, among many other major tablet makers.

A South Korean newspaper has reported that Samsung is planning a 7-inch model to be released in August while an 8-inch and a 10-inch tablet may be released in November and December respectively. That may mean Samsung is planning a Dell Streak's bigger version and an iPad killer.

With Samsung Galaxy and Samsung Wave smartphones touching one million sales worldwide, the tablet version with similar features may also catch up soon.

Also, Samsung may unveil Samsung YP-MB2, a handset similar to Galaxy S smartphone but without phone functions like iPod Touch during the same event of unveiling Galaxy Tab at the Time Warner Center in New York.
