By 3 a.m. Wednesday, at least 43 people were confirmed dead while the remaining 53 have been rescued and sent to hospitals, Xinhua said,  citing Hua Jingwei, a top publicity official in Yichun City where the plane crashed as saying.

Xinhua said the ERJ-190 jet, manufactured by the Brazilian aerospace conglomerate Embraer, has a maximum passenger capacity of 108.

However, with 96 people on board, the plane crashed near the runaway of Lindu airport of Yichun at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday, about 40 minutes after it took off from Harbin, Xinhua said.

No official account has been made regarding what happened during the landing as the investigation into the cause of the crash has not yet concluded.
