Disney continues to cross more milestones and breaking barriers as its third sequel of the Toy Story is expected to cross the $1-billion mark on Monday.

The movie, jointly produced by Disney and Pixar, will be the highest grossing animated movie ever and the second movie from Disney this year to touch the milestone.

The record for the highest grossing animated movie was previously held by Dreamwork's Shrek 2  at $919.8 million in 2004.

Toy Story was incidentally the first movie made by Pixar in 1995, when it was under the leadership of Apple CEO Steve Jobs. All movies by the company have been nominated for an Oscar and the company is believed to have breathed life back into the animated movie genre.

Every movie in the sequel of the Toy Story, which is about a group of wooden toys that come to life led by a cowboy Woody and his friend Buzz Lightyear, has consistently broken box office records.

Toy Story 3 broke the record of the biggest single week collection for an animated movie in the U.S. at $110 million.

The Walt Disney Co, the parent company of Disney-Pixar, has been focusing more on its units such as Marvel, Disney and Pixar as these movies give it a wider scope to generate revenues in terms of toys and games. The company divested its unit of Miramax Films in July for $660 million.

The unit was previously responsible for low-budget movies such as the cult hit Pulp Fiction.

Disney's strategy of focusing on animated movies seems to be paying off, with Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland also crossing the $1 billion mark earlier this year. The movie was also the highest 3D opening ever, surpassing James Cameron's Avatar this year. Alice in Wonderland, which is based on Lewis Carroll's novels,  is the company's biggest overseas release of all time and the highest-grossing film of 2010.

The company has come a full circle with the new records. Alice's Wonderland was also the first animated short film created by the company's founder Walt Disney in 1923. The movie led to the creation of a series called Alice Comedies and the beginning of the Disney Cartoon Studio.
