3M has agreed to acquire Tel Aviv-based Attenti, a remote people-tracking technology provider for $230 million.

Attenti, formerly known as Dmatek, provides solutions to track 50,000 individuals daily around the world in the judicial and geriatric care segments.

The acquisition, which follows 3M's purchase of fingerprint ID company Cogent Inc. for $943 million on Monday, gives 3M access to RFID and GPS technology.

Attenti leverages location and communication technologies to create diverse products for inmate tracking, voice verification, alcohol monitoring and officer monitoring.

The acquisitions will boost 3M's presence in the geriatric care segment. Recently GE and Intel formed an alliance to focus on home-based healthcare monitoring devices.

Currently location-based services have gained spotlight because of Google and Facebook's launch of products and features around these technologies. Combined with cloud computing and GPS, location technology is offering new modes of revenue when used in conjunction with smartphones and tablets.

Being a diversified technology company, 3M can also tap into these markets with Attenti acquisition.
