It didn't take long for Dell to reclaim its second place position in the PC industry.

According to research firm, iSuppli,  Dell has reclaimed its place ahead of Acer in the global PC market. Nine months prior, Dell fell behind the Tapei-based company, which relied upon small notebooks for its growth over the past few years. The declining interest in these products allowed for Dell to overtake Acer in terms of units of PCs shipped out and industry share.

As it stands now, Dell is at 12.8 percent of the industry share and Acer is at 12.4 percent. HP stands above both at 18.1 percent.

"With its product line heavily focused on mobile PCs, Acer's sequential decline in notebook shipments impacted its position at the total PC level more than its competitors, which were able to draw on the upswing in desktop shipments to bolster their total shipments," said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst, compute platforms research at iSuppli.

According to the Gartner research, mini notebooks represented 18 percent of the PC industry in the second quarter of this year. This was a two percent drop off from the prior year when it was 20 percent. For a company like Acer, that has 80 percent of its business tied up in notebooks according to iSuppli, this kind of drop off can be deadly.

Meanwhile, Dell has rebounded with the resurgence in interest from corporate customers for desktop PCs and entry-level servers. iSuppli says desktop PCs for the top 5 OEMs grew between 12 and 15 percent from the prior quarter.

Despite this, Dell didn't exactly experience large growth in the second quarter of 2010. The amount of its PCs it shipped fell 1.2 percent from the first quarter. Still, it did better than Acer. According to iSuppli, Acer shipped 10.2 million PCs, a 6.2 percent drop off from the first quarter when it was 10.9 million.

In line with Gartner's numbers, the entire industry actually saw a rise in the number of PCs shipped. It went from 81.6 million units in the first quarter to 82.5 million in the second. Furthermore, despite Dell and Acer both dropping off from the first quarter, they both have experienced impressive year-over-year growth.

Following HP, Dell and Acer in the top five global PC OEMs was Levono with 10.1 percent of the industry share and Toshiba with 5.4 percent of the industry share.
