Japan's Sony Corp has gained a rare victory as its walkman outsold Apple's iPod in the market, researchers at BCN said on Thursday.
Sony got 47.8 percent market share for portable music players in Japan, while Apple fell to 44 percent, according to the Tokyo-based marketing research firm.
Since Apple introduced its iPod into Japan in 2001, the walkman had overtaken the iPod shortly in 2009, but this is the first time that the Sony's walkman outsold the iPod in monthly sales, BCN analyst Eiji Mori said.
However, the switch may be due to Apple's regular update of iPods in September every year. consumers may likely be withdrawing from iPods in await of the new lineups.
Apple on Wednesday showed off a new breed of iPods, calling them "the biggest change ever in our iPod lineup." It also unveiled a music-centred social network in iTunes, as well as Apple TV streaming gadgets in the United States.
