Wellink said in an interview with Market News International that Europe has had a very strong second quarter and that "the third quarter should be okay."

He added that while the ECB's current monetary policy stance was well known, Europe should try and normalise policy to prevent problems building up in the next few years.
He also said that the current strength of the yen was helping German and northern European export competitiveness.
"What is helpful by the way, but not in all respects a positive development, is the strength of the yen," Wellink said.
