BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) acquires some assets of DataViz, maker of Documents To Go application - one of Apple's best- selling apps in 2009.
Digital Daily confirmed the acquisition stating a statement issued to them by RIM saying "RIM has acquired some of the assets of DataViz and hired the majority of its employees to focus on supporting the BlackBerry platform. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but the transaction was not material to RIM in the context of RIM's financial results."
DataViz developed the popular Documents To Go application that allows smartphone users to create, open and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point files and helps synchronize document files between a computer and a smartphone.

The acquisition follows DataViz's termination of the development of Doc To Go for Palm WebOS. The original Doc To Go application was first made for Palm OS and thus the news would come as a shock to webOS community.
For BlackBerry it's a treasure as it attempts to build up its application store which has been found wanting in comparison of Apple Apps Store and Android Market.
A smartphone's success in the prevailing market conditions primarily a function of a rich application store and acceptance of the smartphone OS by the developer community. BlackBerry has failed to capitalize on both these fronts.
The present acquisition of DataViz signifies BlackBerry's approach to build its apps store through acquisitions rather than creating its Blackberry OS ground-up or using its QNX OS acquisition to create a new platform for developers. The acquisition route could be an attempt to bridge the time gap associated with developing a new OS.
