US marines capture German ship hijacked off Somali coast

September 9, 2010 6:05 PM EDT

The U.S. Navy said Thursday Marines stormed a pirate-held ship off the coast of Somalia and reclaimed control of the German-owned vessel.

Nine pirates were arrested and none of the crew of the Magellan Star or the 24 Marines were hurt, the U.S. Navy said in a statement on its website today.

The raid took place about 85 miles southeast of Mukallah, Yemen which includes about three dozen ships from at least 10 countries.

There were no casualties during the pre-dawn raid, the US Fifth Fleet said.

Hijackings off the coast of Somalia have continued this year despite patrols by warships from the United States, the European Union, NATO and China. On Wednesday, the European Union anti-piracy force said pirates had seized a Maltese cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden.
