Socializing on Facebook has overtaken Google search as American Internet surfers are spending more time on the social networking site than searching, according to data from researchers at comScore Inc.

comScore said Americans spent 41.1 million minutes on Facebook in August that is about 9.9 percent of their Internet surfing minutes for the month, barely surpassing 39.8 million minutes or 9.6 percent of surfing minutes on all Google sites combined, including YouTube, the free gmail e-mail service, Google news and other sites.

Yahoo was ranked third with US netizens as they spent 37.7 million minutes or 9.1 percent of their time browsing the sites. For the first time in July, Facebook had overtaken Yahoo in terms of time spent browsing, comScore data showed.

American Internet users had spent less than 5 percent of their online time on Facebook in August 2009 which is about the same percentage of their time spent on Google and about 12 percent on Yahoo.

The social networking site had netted less than 2 percent of American web surfers’ total minutes in August 2007 while Google accounted for less than 4 percent and Yahoo for over 12 percent.

The new data from comScore is based on a combination of reports from a panel of two million users around the world and data from websites’ servers.

"Internet users are spending more time posting photographs, updating status messages and scrolling through news from friends which is rivaling everything else people do online," said comScore.
