Taking a protectionist move on its economy, the US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed two different bills that stipulate that the Congress and the Department of Homeland Security buy only goods made in the US.
Introduced by Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, the Made in America Act mandates the Congress to purchase US-made goods and services.
Another bill introduced by Congressman Larry Kissell, the Berry Amendment Extension Act, directs the Department of Homeland Security and all of its agencies to purchase clothing and other products exclusively made in America on a permanent basis.
"In passing these bills, we reaffirm that when we make it in America, we create jobs, promote our competitiveness, and lead the world economy," said a media report quoting Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
“We can protect our American economy while also protecting our national security and borders. The only way to ensure this is the case is to make these items right here at home,” Kissell said.

Extending the purview of the Berry Amendment to Department of Homeland Security will further promote American manufacturing, said Kissell.
“The U.S. textile industry has worked for years to secure Congressional passage of this pro-jobs and pro-national security legislation… 'buy-U.S.' legislation will provide a shot in the arm to America’s economy that has suffered more than 5.6 million U.S. manufacturing jobs losses in the last decade,” said the report quoting Auggie Tantillo, executive director of the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition.
The Berry Amendment Act was enacted in 1941 mandating the Department of Defence to procure only home-made items.
