GM has announced a $483 million investment which would create 483 jobs at its Spring Hill Tennessee plant.
The Powertrain Plant manufactures three variants of Ecotec four-cylinder engines. A major chunk of the investment of $460 million, which will create 453 jobs, will be absorbed by the Ecotec engines.
With this the total number of jobs created by GM now stands at 7,417 since it emerged from bankruptcy.
The current investment will increase production of the Ecotec engine, used in products like Chevrolet Equinox, Buick LaCrosse and GMC Terrain, by the first quarter of 2011.
"This new commitment to the Spring Hill team will help GM almost triple its North American production volume of four-cylinder engines with direct injection by 2012" said GM North America President Mark Reuss.

The investment in Ecotec four-cylinder engines emphasizes GM's plans to move towards lighter engines in comparison to its V-6 engines and V-8 engines. The effort is also in view of meeting Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) legislation that requires corporate fleets to average 34.6 mpg by 2016.
Earlier GM Inside news had reported that GM will refit its next generation midsize sedans with four-cylinder engines. The current investment outlay underscores GM's efforts to downsize engine capacity.
