91. Venezuela protest halts gold mine output
Hecla Mining Co. says Venezuelan workers are blocking the entrance to its Isidora gold mine, suspending operations. The Idaho-based silver and gold miner says as many as 30 workers have camped in front of the mine's entrance in Venezuela's southern Bolivar state, closing it for eight working days.

92. Yamana Gold's first-quarter profit more than doubles
Yamana Gold Inc. said Wednesday its first-quarter profit more than doubled on higher production and higher prices. For the three months ended March 31, the Toronto-based company's net earnings rose to $63.1 million from $27.4 million in the year-earlier quarter. Yamana did not provide a per-share figure for its net earnings.

Shares of gold mining companies fell Wednesday as the precious metal lost value in U.S. trading. Gold for June delivery fell $7.10 to $870.60 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after earlier dropping as low as $864.40. Also, the dollar rose against major currencies.

Shares of gold-mining companies opened mixed Wednesday as the precious metal lost value in European trading and the U.S. dollar gained value. Gold traded in London at $874 per troy ounce, down from $880 late Wednesday. The euro traded at $1.5418, down from $1.5533 late Tuesday in New York.
