Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. said Wednesday its first-quarter profit more than doubled as prices for those two metals surged. Phoenix-based Freeport said profit rose to $1.12 billion, or $2.64 per share, for the three-month period that ended March 31, compared with $476 million, or $2.02 per share, in the year-earlier period.
