Wynn Resorts Ltd. said Friday it appointed Russell Goldsmith as a director, giving the board its seventh independent member. Goldsmith is chairman and chief executive of City National Bank, and president of its parent, City National Corp. He also serves on a Federal Reserve Board advisory council.

Shares of gold mining companies opened mostly higher Friday as U.S. stocks increased on encouraging economic news. The Commerce Department said personal spending and income rose 0.2 percent last month and inflation at the personal spending level, after stripping out food and energy costs, ticked up in April by a tame 0.1 percent.
