Ahead of the Bell: Unemployment seen rising
Government data due out Friday is expected to show the economy lost jobs for the eighth month in a row and that the unemployment rate moved higher. Wary employers probably cut payrolls by around 75,000 in August, even deeper than the 51,000 eliminated in July, according to the consensus estimate of Wall Street economists surveyed by Thomson/IFR. So far this year, the economy has lost a total of 463,000 jobs.

Brazil says unemployment rose to 8.1 percent in July, reversing a five-month decline. The national statistics institute says joblessness rose slightly since June, when unemployment was 7.8 percent.

Slovak jobless rate increased slightly to 7.47 percent in July, up from 7.42 percent in June, according to government figures released Monday. Slovakia, which became an EU member in 2004, will begin to use the euro currency Jan. 1.
