At least two people were detained by police after chaos broke out and people scuffled and attacked a security guard. Subsequently, an announcement came that the new iPhone would not go on sale.

Apple fans in Beijing, braved freezing weather (below 9 degree Celsius) and waited overnight in long lines to be among the first to get their hands on the new iPhone 4S. However, Apple disappointed them.

Unlike in Beijing, in other places like Shanghai, the Apple Stores reportedly opened at 6 a.m. or 1 hour earlier than scheduled, and began selling the device smoothly.

China Unicom also started offering iPhone 4S with a service contract through its online store. According to the online site, the handset is free to users who commit to a three-year plan for 286 yuan a month or a two-year plan for 386 yuan a month.
