Under the deal, AT&T's rural and suburban wireless coverage will expand. Meanwhile Dobson's $1.7 million subscribers will have access to AT&T's full range of products and services.

Both firms have had a previous agreement as roaming partners, allowing users to go beyond their respective plans calling areas.

AT&T expects to achieve $2.5 billion in synergies as a result of the acquisition.

AT&T will gain expanded access in Alaska, Arizona, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
