Australia's February trade balance report, which was released at 8:30 pm ET, showed that trade surplus widened to A$2.1 billion in February. Analysts were expecting the trade surplus to fall to A$700 million from A$970 million surplus in January.

Following the report, the Australian dollar edged slightly higher against its major opponents. As of 8:30 pm, the aussie was worth near 0.699 against the greenback, 68.9 versus the yen and 1.897 against the euro.
