RTTNews - Economic activity in Australia remained anemic in March, according to survey results released Wednesday by Westpac Bank and the Melbourne Institute.

The group's leading economic index for March increased by just 0.3 percent compared to February, and was 5.1 percent lower than its level of one year ago.

The index is a gauge of economic activity three to nine months into the future.

The March reading was a slight improvement from the annualized reading seen in February, but remained below the long term trend of 2.8 percent. The march reading was the first annualized rise registered since April 2008.
