The Australian dollar drifted higher against its major counterpart following the Conference Board's report showed that Leading Economic Index for Australia registered a decline of 0.6 percent in January.

The aussie rose to 68.43 against the Japanese yen, 0.6999 against the greenback and 1.9409 against the euro by 8:00 pm Eastern Time, compared to Wednesday's New York session closing values of 68.1, 0.698 and 1.9471, respectively. As of now, the aussie is worth 68.43 against the yen, 0.6992 versus the dollar and 1.9435 per euro.

The Board's Coincident Index increased 0.6 percent for the period. The Leading index now stands at 111.2, with the base of 100 established in 2004. The Coincident Index stands at 13.1.
