UPDATE: Marvel officially confirmed that the “Avengers: Infinity War” trailer will be released Wednesday.

Original story: “Avengers: Infinity War” is probably the most highly anticipated superhero film of 2018, but most fans still haven’t seen any footage from it. That might change this week.

Joe and Anthony Russo, who are directing the third and fourth “Avengers” films, started a countdown on Monday. They posted a large picture of the number three. Fans quickly started speculating that it’s a countdown to the “Infinity War” trailer, but what did the three mean? Three hours? Three weeks? Three days?

It seems like it’s the last option. On Tuesday, the directors posted a similar picture with a giant two. They are counting down to Thursday, but they still haven’t confirmed that it’s the trailer release date.

The first “Avengers: Infinity War” footage debuted at Disney’s D23 Expo in July. Later that month, San Diego Comic-Con got a sneak peek. Fans assumed that the footage would soon be officially released for everyone to see, but it’s been months with out any glimpse of the video (aside from some leaked clips). That might change on Thursday.

The Russo brothers have kept their answers vague when asked directly about the trailer release date. “We’re hard at work on a trailer. I don’t want to spoil it for them, but stay tuned. They’re going to see an Infinity War teaser very soon,” Joe Russo told Good Morning America in July.

Typically, Marvel Studios’ movies have been releasing trailers more than six months ahead of their planned release dates. The “Thor: Ragnarok” trailer first debuted in April before its November release. The “Black Panther” teaser dropped in June, and the film isn’t coming out until February 2018. Then again, this isn’t the beginning of a franchise or a creative reboot. Both “Avengers” films made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, and fans are even more excited for the third installment.

It’s easy to see why Marvel Studios would want to keep this particular film secret for as long as possible. It’s set to be an epic finale to all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies so far. Thanos (Josh Brolin) will finally arrive and his quest for the Infinity Stones will bring together all the heroes of the MCU. Everyone from Spider-Man (Tom Holland) to the Guardians of the Galaxy will join the Avengers to save the universe.

“Avengers: Infinity War” hits theaters May 4.
