  • Barca are set to host Eibar on Saturday in the La Liga
  • Eibar boss has claimed that Messi does not need to miss games to rest
  • Barca are trailing leaders Real Madrid by just a point

Eibar manager Jose Mendilibar said “this b----rd [Lionel] Messi” does not need to miss games to rest as he can choose to do so while playing a match.

Mendilbar’s remarks came ahead of Eibar’s La Liga clash against FC Barcelona Saturday after there have been questions regarding whether Messi will start the match or not.

The Spaniard coach went on to add that there is no point in resting Messi because he’s an expert at only exerting himself when wants to.

“I don't think [Messi] rests. This b----rd rests in the game. He knows when he has to participate when to rest. If he was given the day off he would have a worse time watching from the stands and get more tired,” Mendilibar said during his pre-match press conference Friday, as reported by Marca.

Mendilbar has experienced Messi’s damage in the past when the attacking player was not even fully fit. Messi, who was sick during the match, came from the bench and scored twice against Mendilbar’s then club Osasuna.

“Once with Osasuna, we went to play a Copa del Rey game [at the Camp Nou]. In the morning of the game [Messi] was ruled out because he had a problem with his stomach and had a fever," Mendilibar recollected. “After eating, he was called up, he was on the bench, we were losing 2-0 and suddenly I see him warming up. He came on, scored two goals and we lost 4-0.”

FC Barcelona are currently placed second in the La Liga table but they are trailing leaders Real Madrid by just a point. The gap reduced last week when Barca won their fixture against Getafe FC, Real drew theirs against Celta Vigo.

Meanwhile, Eibar are placed 16th and are only three points clear of the relegation. However, their manager Mendilbar is confident that his boys can put up a tough fight against the reigning champions Saturday at Nou Camp.

“We've been watching what they are doing. You see everything they do and it looks like a scary movie,” the 58-year-old manager added.
