A district attorney is investigating the death of a two-week old boy on Sept. 28 2011 at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn after contracting herpes, following an Orthodox, ritual circumcision.

We are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of this child, Brooklyn DA spokesman Jerry Schmetterer told the New York Daily News.

The infant who has not been identifed died of disseminated herpes simplex virus Type 1, complicating ritual circumcision with oral suction, the Daily News confirmed.

The baby had been circumcised in a very controversial procedure where the mohel draws blood from the wound with his mouth. In 2004, another infant died dude to complications from the same procedure.

One study suggests that about every nine in every 100,000 babies die from circumcision-related causes.
