Parents of infants beware—a recall has been issued for specific models of Angelcare Monitors Inc. baby monitor products this week, following the death of two infants due to a strangulation hazard.

According to a report released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Thursday, six different models, 600,000 products total, of Angelcare Movement and Sound Monitors with Sensor Pads are being recalled due to the 11-foot cord attached to the products, which has been known to cause strangulation. “The cord attached to the baby monitor’s sensor pad is placed under the crib mattress, which poses a strangulation risk if the child pulls the cord into the crib and it becomes wrapped around the neck,” stated the press release.

The CSPSC, in conjunction with the Quebec, Canada-based company, issued the recall following the two deaths of infants due to the product defect. “In November 2011, a 13-month-old female died in San Diego, California, and, in August 2004, an 8-month-old female died in Salem, Oregon. In both fatalities, the cord from the sensor pads was pulled into the crib by the infant,” stated the report. According to the CSPC, two other infants have been “entangled in the cords” but did not die as a result.

The Angelcare monitors being recalled consist of the model numbers: AC1100, AC201, AC300, AC401 AC601 and 49255. The products, sold between October 1999 through September 2013, were available for sale at over 70 different locations including Babies R Us/Toys R Us, Burlington Coat Factory, Meijer, Sears, Walmart, Amazon, Target.com and Overstock.com.

Customers are advised to not return the defective monitors to stores. All recalled products should be immediately put out of the reach of children.
