Taranis Drone
BAE Systems' Taranis Drone BAE SYSTEMS

The UK military is preparing to launch a supersonic unmanned aircraft after testing of the $303 million project was completed in Australia.

The BAE systems PLC (LON:BA)-designed Taranis drone took 1.5 million hours to develop, can be controlled via stellite anywhere in the world and hides from enemies using stealth technology.

The drone which is named after the Celtic god of thunder was grossly over budget and took seven years in the planning. The development was led by BAE systems but also involved Rolls Royce Holdings plc (LON:RR), General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) Aviation Systems, Qinetiq Group PLC (LON:QQ) and the UK Ministry of Defence.

The Taranis is primarily designed for intercontinental intelligence gathering missions but is also equipped with weaponry that can target aerial and ground targets.
