For a silent film, The Artist is making a lot of noise this season.

With awards season in full gear, the French black-and-white picture has topped yet another list, this time for the 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards nominations. The Artist is up for 12 prizes, including Best Film, Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Leading Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Leading Actress (Berenice Bejo).

Just trailing behind is Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the British spy film based on the 1974 novel of the same name. The picture, directed by Tomas Alfredson, received 11 nominations, including Leading Actor (Gary Oldman). This is a big boost for the film, which has been largely ignored by major award shows, including the Critics' Choice Awards, Independent Spirit Awards and Sunday's Golden Globe Awards.

Fresh off his big night at the Golden Globes, best director winner Martin Scorsese is up for the same prize at this year's BAFTAs. Hugo is up for nine awards including Cinematography and Costume Design.

Scorsese, this year's BAFTA fellow, is also nominated in the Documentary category for George Harrison: Living in the Material World.

Joining Dujardin and Oldman in the Leading Actor category are this year's awards season favorites George Clooney (The Descendants), Brad Pitt (Moneyball), Michael Fassbender (Shame).

To no one's surprise, the ladies nominated in the Leading Actress category are Bejo (The Artist), Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) and Viola Davis (The Help).

Along with The Artist and Tinker, The Descendants, Drive and The Help are all up for Best Film.

Monday's BAFTA nomination announcements come just less than one week after the final five were announced for the show's annual Orange Rising Star Award, as voted by the public. The shortlist, selected by customers of the British cellphone company Orange, was criticized by many as being an all-male list.

Sad to see no women on the BAFTA rising star shortlist. The panel that determined the long list had no say in the final five, BAFTA juror Simon Pegg wrote on Twitter last week.

Tom Hiddleston (War Horse, Midnight in Paris), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris O' Dowd (Bridesmaids), Eddie Redmayne (My Week With Marilyn) and Adam Deacon (Anuvahood) are up for the Rising Star prize.

The BAFTAs will be handed out on Feb. 12 at the Royal Opera House in London, with host Stephen Fry (Harry Potter audiobooks).
