Bates Motel
Norma (Vera Farmiga) and Norman (Freddie Highmore) return in Season 4 of "Bates Motel." A&E/ Bettina Strauss

Are you ready to check back in to “Bates Motel”? A&E’s hit “Psycho” prequel returns on Monday, March 7, with its highly anticipated fourth season. But before fans get wrapped up in the “mother” of all drama, we’re rounding up everything you need to know about the upcoming season.

1. Where We Left Off

Season 3 ended on a bit of a bloody note for the Bates family. Norman (Freddie Highmore) went off the deep end and killed Bradley (Nicola Peltz). But the death of the teen wasn’t even the biggest shocker. Although Norman was the one that killed her, he believed that it was actually his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), who committed the crime. The finale concluded with Norman envisioning himself standing next to Norma as they watched Bradley’s car sink in the water.

Elsewhere, Romero (Nestor Carbonell) committed the ultimate crime for Norma. He killed Bob Paris (Kevin Rahm), the owner of the Arcanum Club, who was threatening to expose Norma’s secret about Norman to the police.

However, there was one bit of light in the final episode. Dylan (Max Thieriot) was able to use the money he got from his gun run for Chick (Ryan Hurst) to get Emma (Olivia Cooke) a lung transplant.

2. Season 4, Episode 1 Synopsis

According to the episode description for the Season 4 premiere, Norma will be out searching her son. Norman will be disoriented and find himself in “unfamiliar surroundings.” Meanwhile, Dylan will be waiting for word on how Emma’s surgery went, and Romero will get a “surprising proposition.”

3. More “Mother”

Fans got to see Norman transform into “Mother” during Season 3, and that will definitely continue into the upcoming new episodes. Farmiga teased Entertainment Weekly that the series is “just starting to explore that.”

“This is an introduction to a new character that I’m taking on,” she explained. “She is a playground. I think Norma Bates is always rooted in striving for integrity, and I think [Mother Norma] is a little more devilish.”

4. New Faces

Some new characters will be checking in this season. Jaime Ray Newman (“Wicked City”) will be recurring as a woman named Rebecca Hamilton. Rebecca will certainly be shaking things up for White Pine Bay since she’s an “old flame” of Romero’s. Deadline reveals that she’s “still very much in love” with the sheriff.

Damon Gupton (“The Player”) is also joining the series in a recurring role. He’ll be portraying Dr. Gregg Edwards, a resident doctor at Pineview Mental Institution. “Bates Motel” viewers can’t forget that Pineview is the same place where Norma looked into getting Norman admitted last season.

5. The Return of Chick

Hurst will be reprising his role as Chick in Season 4. And it’s safe to say that this is not good news for the Bates family. Caleb (Kenny Johnson) left town after beating Chick up and stealing money from him after the botched gun drop off, but Dylan is still in White Pine Bay.

6. Season 5

Fans don’t need to worry about “Bates Motel” ending on an unresolved cliffhanger. The show has already been picked up for a fifth season. Although, Season 5 is potentially the last. Executive producer Carlton Cuse has said on multiple occasions that they have a “pretty clear road map.”

“Bates Motel” Season 4 premieres on A&E on Monday, March 7, at 9 p.m. EST.
